The Ediacaran Period was ratified in 2004, the first new geologic period established in more than a century, and three ICS Working Groups are currently active in Ediacaran subdivision. This session will evaluate the key stratigraphic criteria that can be used to subdivide the Ediacaran into series and stages, describe the key sections for Ediacaran correlation worldwide, and assess the global correlation of potential GSSP levels. A major emphasis will be on the most useful criteria and sections for definition of a GSSP for the Terminal Ediacaran Stage, a ~10 myr interval characterized by the oldest abundant, globally distributed shelly fossils (Cloudina and Namacalathus) in Earth history, that postdates a major Ediacaran C-isotope anomaly (Shuram) and occur immediately below the base of the Cambrian.
The proceedings of the session will be printed on an international journal. The conveners will submit a proposal to Precambrian Research
